What is prisons education?

    Prison education is an important part of any prison’s regime. Improving prisoner literacy and numeracy, providing vocational training, and other opportunities for personal development can give prisoners the knowledge and skills they need to get jobs on release and turn away from crime.

Are there any changes to the 2019 National Prisoner statistics data?

    Data for 2019 have been updated with changes to the population counts for several states. As of December 31, 2001, sentenced felons from the District of Columbia were the responsibility of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. a Estimates for 2019 include imputed counts for Oregon, which did not submit 2018 or 2019 National Prisoner Statistics data.

What racial groups make up the most prisoners?

    Each year from 2010 to 2020, American Indians and Alaska Natives and Asians, Native Hawaiians, and Other Pacific Islanders each represented between 1.1% and 1.6% of prisoners. This is the first year this series has presented data on these two racial groups (table 3)

What percentage of prisoners have a learning difficulty/disability?

    Overall, 29% of prisoners who took an initial assessment had a learning difficulty/disability (LDD) confirmed through an LDD assessment. This varied across ethnic groups and was highest for White at 33% and lowest for Other ethnic group at 17%.
