reasons for language change
What are the reasons why language varies?
Language variation is seen as a result of certain factors that influence the way people communicate.
These factors are mainly of a social nature and are influenced by factors such as a person's social status, age, gender, education level, and regional location. Why do we change language?
One reason languages change is because we are constantly developing new things to talk about, so we need to create new words, expressions, and grammar to communicate about the new topics.
We very often do this by repurposing existing words.13 jui. 2023What caused the English language to change?
Some of the main influences on the evolution of languages include: the movement of people across countries and continents, for example, migration and, in previous centuries, colonization.
For example, English speakers today would probably be comfortable using the Spanish word 'loco' to describe someone who is 'crazy'.Language change is influenced by social factors such as the degree of contact versus isolation experienced by speech communities and the level of social stability versus social instability in communities' histories .
- Semantic bleaching. It was “unbelievable”…even if it was only spaghetti bolognese.
- Synchronic variation. Too “lit”-eral for our liking.
- Movement of people. Cultural word-swapping is fluid.
- Simplification. Clearing the clutter from language makes it so much simpler.
- Prestige.
