    The cooking, cleaning, and caring for children, elderly and sick at home by family members, commonly known as unpaid care and domestic work, is often taken for granted although it is vital for both people's well-being and the functioning of the market- oriented economy.

    Around the world, women do the vast majority of the unpaid work, including child care, cooking, cleaning and farming.
    This unpaid work is essential for households and economies to function, but it is also valued less than paid work.

  • What do you mean by unpaid work?

    Unpaid labor or unpaid work is defined as labor or work that does not receive any direct remuneration.

  • Unpaid care work includes caring for children, elderly and sick peo- ple. It also includes washing, cook- ing, shopping cleaning and helping other families with their chores. Unpaid work includes food, fuel and water collection and other energy provision, informal unpaid work, family labour in agriculture, etc.
