What is a certificate of origin?
This is a sample Certificate of Origin for shipments of eligible goods to countries covered by the U.S.-CAFTA-DR agreement. Prepared by the International Trade Administration.
How do I claim preferences under CAFTA-DR?
Any claim for preferences under the CAFTA-DR must be supported by a Certificate of Origin attesting to the imported product’s originating status. This link provides a PDF template demonstrating how such a Certificate of Origin can be structured. The template is fillable, and users may elect to use it.
Is the CAFTA-DR the same as NAFTA?
No. The CAFTA-DR differs from NAFTA. Under the CAFTA-DR, there is no standard certificate of origin document to be completed and the rules of origin are different. Each free trade agreement to which the United States is a party has its own unique requirements.
Does CAFTA-DR require a certificate of origin?
The CAFTA-DR calls for the importer to make a claim of preferential treatment. This Agreement does not require that the importer provide a certificate of origin in support of the claim of preference unless requested by the customs authority.
