An Act of general application having been the legal basis of Québec Law from 1866 till 1993.
Governing all civil law matters, it was amended in 1969 by the Act respecting the co-ownership of immoveables in order to introduce the legal regime of divided co-ownership.In Canada, only Quebec has its own Civil Code.
It was in 1857 that the Parliament of United Canada decided to codify all the civil statutes of Lower Canada and to bring them together in one bilingual collection.
What is considered Lower Canada?
Lower Canada covered the southeastern portion of the present-day province of Quebec, Canada, and (until 1809) the Labrador region of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Upper Canada covered what is now the southern portion of the province of Ontario and the lands bordering Georgian Bay and Lake Superior.
