  • How much money did Ofcom receive in 2019/20?

    The £125.0m (2018/19: £124.3m) of income received in 2019/20 covers Ofcom’s core responsibilities (excluding Spectrum Clearance). As part of this, we also received £0.7m of grant funding from Innovate UK under the Regulators Pioneer Fund, for innovative work on the use of blockchain for UK telephone number management.

    This is Ofcom’s sixth Annual Report on the BBC in which we assess the BBC’s performance against all areas of our regulation and set out how we have carried out our role. We are responsible for holding the BBC to account on behalf of audiences by providing fair, robust and independent regulation.

    We have also seen a change of Chief Executive during the reporting period, with Jonathan Oxley having taken over as Chief Executive on an interim basis from Sharon White in late November 2019. We are deeply grateful to Sharon for all that she has done in developing Ofcom’s progressive approach and real sense of direction.

  • How does Ofcom finance its liabilities?

    The future financing of Ofcom’s liabilities is met through annual sector tarifs from regulated stakeholders and from WTA receipts retention collected through the Section 400 accounts and retained by Ofcom to fund spectrum related activities together with other non-tarif funded activities, as set out in Section 401 of the Communication Act.

The BBC continued to serve audiences across the UK, providing high-quality, distinctive and relevant content for licence fee payers across a range of cultures and communities.Over half of network television production was in the nations and regions, with 50.7 percent from outside London and 20.8 percent from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.We also remain committed to locating at least 50 percent of our employees outside of London and some 52 percent are currently based outside of the M25. bbc.co.uk

Industry Leading Efficiency

The BBC is now leaner and more efficient with around £199 million of annual savings delivered in 2019/20.Since 2016/17 we have delivered £618 million of recurring annual savings, while licence fee income is 31 percent less than had the licence fee consistently risen with inflation.An independent report, also published today, shows that 95 percent of controllable spend is on content, with less than five percent spent on the support services needed to run the BBC.There has been a 32 percent reduction over five years in overhead spending since 2014/15 and the BBC has retained its industry-leading position for low overheads. bbc.co.uk
