  • What is the difference between dont and ce dont in French?

Ce dont is an indefinite relative pronoun.
It's used for the same reasons as dont (e.g., when replacing something that begins with de) but when there is no antecendent.
Compare: Voici le stylo dont tu as besoin - Here's the pen you need.

  • What is the difference between Dont and que in French?

Que is used to describe an object, so the word that the action is being done to. e.g. le livre que j'ai lit- in this case, 'I' am the subject as is the one reading the book therefore making the book the object- the one having the verb done to it.
Dont is used in the same way but describes a compliment followed by de.

  • Here is the rule up front: Use "dont" in verbal phrases and "duquel" in prepositional phrases.
Let's have a look at what that means.
Verbal phrases always include a verb + de: parler de, avoir besoin de, etc.

The relative pronoun dont is used to indicate possession; it replaces the French preposition de along with the noun. It can refer both to people and objects. By using dont, the person speaking can add extra information about the person or the thing they are referring to.
