Does external debt affect economic growth?
To evaluate the impact of external debt on economic growth, our targeted main variables are GDP and external debt to GDP ratio (EDG). However, few more variables are included as well in the model, namely, budget deficit to GDP ratio (BDG), inflation, secondary enrollment ratio and trade openness along with the above mentioned two variables.
What is the relationship between debt surges and economic growth?
Our results show that the relationship between debt surges and economic growth are complex. Debt surges tend to be followed by weaker economic growth and persistently lower output. However, this negative relationship does not always hold. Surges in public debt tend to have the most negative impact on future growth prospects.
Do external debt burdens impede investment in developing countries?
The authors found that high external debt burdens, in conjunction with macroeconomic instability, impede investment in developing countries. They argue that, for such adjustment packages to result in the levels of investment necessary for the packages to succeed, appropriate relief of external debt is required.

The authors find a nonlinear impact of debt on growth with a turning point—beyond which the government debt‐to‐GDP ratio has a deleterious impact on long‐term growth—at about 90 to 100 percent of GDP. In addition, the negative growth effect of high debt may start already from levels of around 70 to 80 percent of GDP.
