How difficult are fixed expressions & idioms?
Fixed expressions and idioms are a huge part of the Cambridge Advanced exam, coming into play far more frequently than in lower levels. The difficulty with CAE fixed expressions is that learners will often recognise them and understand them when seen in context. However, making them part of their active vocabulary is a much greater challenge.
What is the difference between fixed phrases and compound words?
It is also not easy to draw a clear distinction between fixed phrases and compound words. A great example of this distinction is the phrase; I SEE – which can literally mean to be able to see, or it could also mean ‘I understand’, which would be the fixed phrase.
