  • How do you assess letters and sounds?

    To assess sounds, point to each lowercase letter and have the student say the letter sound only. Record a “+” if the student provided the correct letter sound and a “-” for an incorrect or unknown sounds. Transfer the number of known letters and sounds onto the charts if desired.
  • How do you assess students on letter sounds?

    If the student says the letter sound instead of the letter name, say: “That's the letter sound. What is the letter name?” If the student says the correct answer, mark a check. If the student says the same of different error, make the student's response as an error. Mark sounds between slashes (e.g., /m/).
  • LNF assesses a student's ability to recognize individual letters and say their letter names. Using standardized directions, the assessor presents a page of uppercase and lowercase letters arranged in random order and asks the student to name the letters.
